There’s a clock in the local post office and for as long as I know, the clock has displayed the same time: Wednesday, 16th April, 11.45 am. This year a tourist could walk in on 17th April and claim that the clock needs a reset but a local would still just smile and go about his day. [Fun fact: last time 16th April was on a Wednesday was in 2014, next time will be in 2031.]
As I was waiting for my registered letter to come out the other end of Italian red tape, I contemplated this iconic clock and how it had become a local celebrity. For decades it has stood by its truth and while it must have caused a lot of confusion to begin with, now it’s an old friend dressed in vintage design, that nobody dares to question anymore but turns to for comfort. Apparently people have made offers to buy it but it’s as priceless as it is timeless.
Contemplating this clock made me realise that some people are just like that: they will stand their ground, no matter what. They will stay firm in their truth and even if they cause upheaval and disruption eventually others will seek them out because of it. Because they do not waiver, do not fail an remain eternal and once every blue moon they even completely align with the rest of the world…
